Vidic is understood to have signed a two-year deal with Inter, with the option of a third year, in a move believed to be worth in excess of £18m in pre-tax earnings to the player.

United manager David Moyes said last month the decision to let Vidic leave had been “mutual”, although sources close to the 32-year-old claim he had been open to the possibility of staying.

Typically United have only offered one-year contracts to players over 30 and with no extension immediately forthcoming Vidic decided to explore other options.

Turkish club Galatasaray were strongly linked with Vidic but as soon as Inter declared their interest, the Serie A club was always his preferred destination where he will link up with compatriot Zdravko Kuzmanovic.

Confirmation of Vidic’s departure leaves striker Wayne Rooney as favourite to take over the United captaincy after he committed his future to the club, although Moyes will not make a formal decision on who takes the skipper’s armband until the summer.
