Benjani explains why he pulled out of ZIFA elections

Former Warriors and Manchester City forward, Benjani Mwaruwari says he will not endorse any football candidate running for the Zifa presidency.

Mwaruwari who had earlier expressed interested to run for the ZIFA top job withdrew his candidature following a clause which states that those running for the presidency should be at least 40 years old.

The former Zimbabwe international is 38.

Benjani told Soccer24 “I am humbled by the support when I announced my intention to run for the Zifa presidency. I withdrew my candidature out of respect of the constitution. I could have taken any position but I want no other position except the presidency.

“I wish all the candidates the best but I will not endorse any of them until I see their manifestos and what they stand for. However, I would want to see someone with a passion for football taking over the reins at Zifa,” he said.

Harare businessman, Phillip Chiyangwa, former footballer James Takavada and Leslie Gwindi successfully filed their petitions to run for the presidency.

Trevor Juul nomination papers were initially rejected as there were no finger prints attached and needs to prove he has been resident in Zimbabwe for the past 5 years.
