Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon seal places in World Cup qualifiers group stage

Continent heavyweights Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon sealed places in the final round of the African World Cup qualifiers after claiming positive results in the second leg of the second round on Tuesday.

Ghana defeated minnows Comoros 2-0 in Kumasi, thanks to goals from Mubarak Wakaso and Jordan Ayew on 17 and 87 minutes respectively. The first leg had ended in a 0-0 draw.

Nigeria eased past Swaziland 2-0 in Port Harcourt to also advance with a 2-0 aggregate win. Forward Simon Moses opened the scoring seven minutes after the break before Celtic’s fullback Efe Ambrose added the second three minutes from time.

Cameroon were held to a goalless draw by Niger in Yaoundé. The Indomitable Lions won the first-leg 3-0 last Friday.

Earlier in the day, Congo and Libya reached the final round of the qualifiers after defeating Ethiopia and Rwanda respectively.

Congo who won the first-leg 4-3 away and claimed a 2-1 win at home while Libya defeated Rwanda 3-1 away to go through to the final round with a 4-1 aggregate win.

Bafana bafana beat Angola 1 -0 to progress 4-1 on aggregate.

Egypt strolled into the final round of the World Cup qualifiers with a 4-0 home win over a jaded Chad side which had just arrived in Alexandria in time for the game, with repeated flight delays back home leaving them with minimal preparation for the crucial match.
