UCL: Big wins for Barca, Arsenal, Chelsea and Bayern

Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi both scored twice as Barcelona thumped Roma 6-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The hosts entered the match knowing that a point would see them qualify from Group E as winners, but a victory for Roma would have given the Italian side automatic qualification ahead of Bayer Leverkusen.

Barcelona were three goals ahead at the break courtesy of a Suarez double and Messi’s first, before Gerard Pique made it 4-0 in the 56th minute. Four minutes later, Messi had his second on the night as Barca made it five without reply.

Arsenal’s hopes of progressing into the knockout stages of the Champions League remain alive and well following a 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb at the Emirates Stadium.

Mesut Ozil opened the scoring for the home side just short of the half-hour mark, before Alexis Sanchez added a couple of his own either side of the interval to seal things.

The Gunners headed into the game knowing that they required a perfect record from their final two Group F outings, as well as a favour from elsewhere, which was duly provided by Bayern Munich beating Olympiacos in Bavaria.

A dominant first-half display helped 10-man Bayern Munich thrash Olympiacos 4-0.

Chelsea moved to within 90 minutes of the Champions League last 16 courtesy of a 4-0 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv at the Sammy Ofer Stadium this evening.

The visitors opened the scoring after 20 minutes when Gary Cahill stabbed a rebound home from close range, and the home side’s task became even tougher when Tal Ben Haim was sent off five minutes before half time.

Chelsea struggled to make the most of their numerical advantage until the final 20 minutes, but Willian’s free kick opened the floodgates as Oscar and Kurt Zouma added further gloss to the scoreline.
