Influential Warriors captain Danny ‘Deco’ Phiri has reportedly failed a fitness test casting further into doubt the skipper’s inclusion into the CHAN squad.
Phiri who have been on the sidelines since the begining of the camp is now solely racing against time and could virtually miss the tournament after failing a fitness test yesterday.
The Herald exclusively revealed that Deco has been excluded from the squad considering the little time left before the naming of the final squad.
The injury setback is a major blow for the Warriors because of the influence the player has over his troops. Danny is also the 2nd player surviving from the last crop of players that graced the previous CHAN tournament in South Africa meaning the squad will miss out on experience.
In his absence, Hardlife Zvirekwi who is the other player surviving from the previous tournament will carry the armband.
Danny Phiri has endured the agony of watching from the sidelines and in the unlikely event that he recovers in the coming few days, the player will no match the fitness levels of the other players.
Meanwhile, Zifa is also reportedly organising friendly matches against Mozambique and Togo before the tournament.
