Violence erupts in Kenya after Matemera’s key decision

Zimbabwean referee Norman Matemera was in the spotlight this afternoon in an AFCON qualifier between Kenya and Guinea Bissau.

With the score line goalless Matemera and his referee team that included fellow countrymen Salani Ncube and Edgar Rumeki as the assistants  had a tough decision to make on whether a Guinea Bissau shot had crossed the line or not.

Matemera signalled a goal leading to violence erupting at the at Nyayo Stadium while Kenyan players protested the decision.

There was lengthily stoppage as police tried to control the crowd and tear gas was fired to disperse fans. Play resumed later and the remaining six minutes of the match were played without incident.

The loss effectively ends Kenya’s hopes of qualifying for AFCON 2017 after failing to win their first four matches.
