Cameroon legend Rigobert Song wakes up from coma

Former Liverpool defender Rigobert Song has woken up from a coma after suffering a stroke and has been flown to France for further treatment, sources close to his family are reporting.

The 40-year-old Song was rushed to hospital in Yaounde, Cameroon, after suffering from a brain aneurysm and was in a critical condition.

According to reports on Tuesday morning, the director of Yaounde Central Hospital confirmed on national TV news Song is now out of a coma and is breathing on his own without oxygen ventilator machines.

Song joined Liverpool for £2.7m in January 1999, and played 35 times for the Reds before leaving for West Ham United in November 2000. He also played for Galatasaray, Koln, Lens, Metz and Trabzonspor, winning 137 caps for Cameroon after having made his debut at the age of 17, including a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics.

Song is the uncle of former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder Alex Song, and is currently the manager of the Chad national team.

Former Liverpool team-mates Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler paid tribute to Song on Twitter, with Carragher tweeting: “Hope everything ends up okay”.
