10 Facts about Moses Chunga

As we celebrate the day Zimbabwe Warriors and Dynamos legend was born, Soccer24 have come up with some facts about Moses Chunga.

  • In 1986, Moses Chunga was voted Soccer Star of the year.
  • Chunga  played football for Dynamos together with his elder brother Kembo Chunga and younger brother Dickson Chunga in the mid 80s.
  • In December 1986, Chunga arrived in England for trials with Nottingham Forest. He impressed  the coach but the opportunity went up in flames after he failed to follow a simple instruction to pass the ball.
  • He is the first football player from an independent Zimbabwe to make it into Europe straight from local league.
  • During his  playing days, he was know for his ball control and his ability to score goals while playing as a midfielder.
  • Moses Chunga’s heroic hat-trick in 1987 against Tornadoes was immortalised in the song Tornadoes v Dynamos by The Real Sounds of Africa. The track received air play on BBC Radio One’s John Peel program. You can listen to the track below:
  • Chunga holds the record of scoring many goals in one season in the post independent Zimbabwe. He scored 46 goals in 1986 season and since then no one has managed to surpass that mark.
  • Moses Chunga was honoured by a Belgian club Eendracht Aalst in 2012 for the services he rendered during his time at the club from 1988 to 1992. During the “homecoming show” he emotionally cried as he received a standing ovation from the club’s fans in his first appearance at the stadium since his departure.
  • Moses Chunga was born to parents of Malawian descent, but chose to represent Zimbabwe, his nation of birth at international level.
  • On his 51st birthday, he received news from Belgium that the man who took him to Eendracht Aalst passed away on the same day.
