Benjani backs Pasuwa

Former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari has joined the debate on national team coach Calisto Pasuwa ‘s fate backing him to stay and lead on.

This follows the disastrous campaign at CHAN 2016 in Rwanda where the Warriors were bundled out of the tournament prematurely at the group stages having accumulated just one point.

A multitude of fans have called for the sacking of Pasuwa citing his technical ineptness and failure to read the game. Pasuwa has also a terrible African record where he has failed taking charge of Dynamos CAF Champions league campaigns.

However some fans fighting in Pasuwa’s corner have suggested Pasuwa should not be blamed for the team’s failure but poor preparations in the run up to the tournament.

Mwaruwari who have captained Zimbabwe at two AFCON believes the coach should be given more time and be given full support for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers where he appears to have started well.

Speaking to the Herald Benjani said, “I am backing Pasuwa and I feel that ZIFA should lead the way by doing so because we can’t change a coach with about a month before we play our next game, which is the big game against Swaziland, and instead of debating about the future of the coach we should be looking at how best we can prepare for the two crucial matches,”

He also added that a new coach can derail the momentum as he will need time to settle down.

“If we bring in a new coach, no matter how good that coach is, he will need time to know the players and for me that will be taking 10 steps backwards and that is why I feel that I should also speak in support of Pasuwa because continuity is important in football.”
