SA Premier League comments on match fixing scandal

The South African Premier Soccer League has issued a statement regarding match fixing that allegedly took place in the ABSA Premiership.

The match fixing ring that targeted Zimbabwe national team games is believed to have fixed ABSA Premiership games as well with Warriors players such as George Chigova named in the scandal.

Chigova reportedly accepted money for a game that Polokwane ended up losing 5-0 with a fellow teammate Lebogang Motumi also named . Former Warriors coach Ian Gorowa who is currently the Moroka Swallows coach is also implicated in the scandal.

A statement from the South African PSL read:

The Premier Soccer League has been provided with information that alleges that certain players and officials registered with the league have been involved in match fixing and corruption.

The League takes allegations such as these very seriously and has preferred charges against those who have been named. The Disciplinary Committee of the League will hear the charges on the 30th of March 2016 and the League has every confidence that the process will be expeditious and effective.

The League is not in a position to comment further at this stage.
