Namibia gearing up for hosting COSAFA Cup

he 2016 Cosafa Castle Cup is coming to town and Windhoek will host the draw for the June regional tournament on 25 April as the Brave Warriors look to retain the trophy they won in South Africa last year.
Namibia were awarded the right to host the regional tournament last year and with the actual tournament scheduled for 11-25 June in Windhoek, Council of Southern Africa Football Association (Cosafa) on Wednesday met with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to reignite Namibia’s readiness for Southern Africa’s a prestigious football spectacle.

The LOC is tasked with among others ensuring stadia readiness, catering and accommodation, transport, accreditation, ticketing for the championship, security and medical services, to bring about a successful hosting of the 2016 Cosafa Castle Cup in Windhoek.

Chairman of the LOC Roger Kambatuku reaffirmed his committee’s dedication to the work at hand.

We are very busy with all the work that needs to be done in time for the opening of the tournament on 11 June. Our first event is the final draw to be conducted on 25 April here in Windhoek and besides that there is a lot to do for the realisation of the tournament, Kambatuku said after the meeting.

Also lined-up before the opening match on 11 June is the Cosafa Castle Cup Trophy Tour which will run from 30 April to 10 June from Keetmanshoop, to Rundu, Walvis Bay and Oshakati. Organizers are also putting together a 24-hour 5-a-side football festival at the Football For Hope Centre in Katutura from 4-5 June while the Cosafa Castle Cup champions, the Brave Warriors will host a parade in Katutura.

Eight national teams will be in the bowl for the draw, to go into two Groups after which the group winners will join the defending champions Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana and Mozambique in the quarterfinals.

The Group matches will be played between 11 and 16 June at Sam Nujoma and Independence Stadium, while the quarterfinal action will be on 18 and 19 June. The Plate semifinal will be contested on 21 June with the semifinals proper slated for 22 June. The Plate final will be on 24 June, with the third place and the final to be played on 25 June. – nfa.org.na
