AFCON 2017 preparations pick up pace ahead of draw

Preparations for next year’s Total African Cup of Nations to be hosted by Gabon have picked up pace with countries participating undergoing a Team Workshop on Tuesday.

According to CAF the workshop was attended by heads of delegation, coaches and other administrative officials of the 16 qualified teams for next year’s final tournament scheduled for 14 January to 5 February 2017 in the Gabonese cities of Libreville, Franceville, Oyem and Port Gentil.

Group A will be based in the Gabonese capital, Libreville, Group B in Franceville, Group C in Oyem with Port Gentil hosting the teams in Group D. Whilst host Gabon and holders are Cote d’Ivoire are certain to be Libreville and Oyem respectively, Ghana and Algeria, the other tops seeds in Pot 1 will learn their fate on Wednesday, during the draw, with the positions B1 or D1.

The four stadia that will host the matches during the three-week tournament are Stade de l’Amitié – Libreville, Stade de Franceville – Franceville, Stade d’Oyem – Oyem and Stade de Port-Gentil – Port Gentil.

The opening and final matches will be held at the Stade de l’Amitié in Libreville, whilst Stade de Port-Gentil hosts the third place match. The quarter-finals will be played in each of the four venues with the semis taking place in Libreville and Franceville.

The draw for the tournament will be held later this evening at 19:30 Zimbabwean time.
