AWCON: Zimbabwe and South Africa play goalless draw

Zimbabwe failed to register a goal in their opening match of AWCON as they were held to a goalless draw by South Africa.

It was a significant result for the team considering Banyana Banyana had walloped the mighty Warriors 3-0 just a week ago in a friendly.

Zimbabwe did well to restrict their opponents’ fluid forward players in a quiet first half, but they barely mustered an opening of their own with their only two attempts of the half failing to trouble the opponent gollie.

It took until a third of the way through the match before the Zimbabwe created their first chance, which striker curled towards the top corner for Msipha to help over the bar.

Msipha was proving to be the Zimbabwe’ most lively player in the opening 45 minutes, doing well to get in behind only for his shot to be blocked aside by defenders from a few yards out.

South Africa, who started the game as clear favourites, patiently probed away but it proved to be a frustrating first half of limited openings at either end.

It appeared as though things could only get better in the second half, and that looked to be the case from the off as the Zimbabwe quickly found their rhythm.

Zimbabwe were relying on South Africa’s errors in midfield more so than their own creative players creating opportunities, but it was still the Mighty Warriors who looked more likely to make a breakthrough as the hour mark approached.

Banyana Banyana put up a late attacking show being wooed by a remarkable crowd in Yaunde. But the Mighty Warriors defended resolutely and earned themselves a valuble point in group A.

The hosts will however lead the group after they beat Egypt 2-0 in the opening encounter.
