ZIFA says PSL will have 18 teams in 2017

ZIFA has stated that only two teams will be relegated from the Premier Soccer league. ZIFA and the PSL had clashed with each other over the relegation/promotion issue.

The fall out began when ZIFA made a U-turn on an agreement and was suddenly insisted four teams would be relegated despite initially agreeing to relegate only two teams.

The impasse saw ZIFA suspending PSL chairman Peter Dube while CAPS United chairman Lewis Uriri was also suspended.

The PSL subsequently took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which has since written to ZIFA on the matter.

Talks between ZIFA and a PSL committee have taken place in the last couple of weeks and now the association has come-out with its position.

A statement from ZIFA read:

The Zimbabwe Football Association Executive Committee hereby informs the football fraternity and the nation that TWO teams will be relegated from the Premier soccer league in the just ended season and FOUR teams will be promoted into the top-flight league for the 2017 season.

The ZIFA Executive Committee has also appointed Mr Kenny Mubaiwa as the Acting Chairperson of the Premier soccer league and he is authorised to represent Premier soccer league clubs as their Chief.

Advocate Lewis Uriri remains suspended from all football activities after he rejected the association’s kind gesture to lift his suspension. Peter Dube, Ndumiso Gumede, Philani Ncube and Jerry Sibanda also remain suspended until the next ZIFA congress.

With the matter still at CAS it remains to be seen whether the Premier Soccer League agrees to ZIFA’s decision as lifting of suspensions of Uriri and Dube were some of the initial conditions they had.
