Philip Chiyangwa reacts to election win

Philip Chiyangwa says he is ready to lead the region after being elected the new Cosafa president in South Africa today.

Chiyangwa clinched the presidency after being unopposed at the Cosafa Annual General Meeting takes over from Mr Suketu Patel who has been at the helm for two terms.

Chiyangwa expressed his delight at having received the support of the region, who unanimously welcomed his appointment, saying he was “happy and humbled” to lead.

Frans Mbidi of Namibia was voted in as vice-president for the next five years.

Five additional individuals were elected to make up the executive committee in their role as ordinary members. The five are General Pedro Neto (Angola), Mr Andrew Kamanga (Zambia), Mr Sameer Sobha (Mauritius), Mr Alberto Simanga (Mozambique) and Mr Walter Nyamilandu-Manda (Malawi), who has served as an ordinary member on the outgoing exec.
