FIFA expands teams at World Cup to 48

World football governing body FIFA has unanimously voted for the expansion of teams at the World Cup from 32 to 48.

The changes will take effect from 2026 after the FIFA council voted today in Zurich Switzerland.

The decision is likely to well received by African teams who are set to be allocated more places at and expanded World Cup. Currently Africa only has five places at the World Cup. Reports suggest Africa would have nine places under the new set up.

Under the new format the first round will have 16 groups of three teams.
