AFCON 2017: Avram Grant drums up Black Stars

Ghana coach, Avram Grant, has called on the Black Stars to focus on Uganda as AFCON 2017 group D matches kick in. The former Chelsea FC and UEFA Champions League finalist coach said the four time AFCON champions need to rescue maximum results from the group D opener.

“In the last Nations Cup we were very, very close – 22 penalties and we were the better side but that is for memories – now we want to achieve something,” Grant said ahead of Tuesday’s Group D opener with Uganda.

The 61 year old Polish-Israeli manager referred to the melodramatic 2015 AFCON campaign, where Ghana lost the final to Cote d’ivoire after prolonged penalties, in an attempt to fire the West African troops to victory once more.

Grant has played Uganda three times competitively with Ghana, unfavourably drawing twice and losing once.

“They’re a tough team, it’s not easy to play against them – and especially in Ghana we had difficulties in the last games,” Grant said. “But we are not looking at the past too much, we are learning from the past but living in the present.”
