Grobbelaar Keen On Warriors Job

Former Zimbabwe and Liverpool goalkeeper, Bruce Grobbelaar, has expressed a desire to take over the Warriors job, according to reports.

The position of Warriors head coach is set to be vacant following the sacking of Calisto Pasuwa, after a poor AFCON campaign at the recently ended Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

Grobbelaar has revealed that he is ready for the hot seat should the Zimbabwe Football Association be interested in his services.

“As you are aware, I love my country Zimbabwe. I have over [the] years committed myself to Zimbabwean football as a player and as a coach. I still have a lot to give to Zimbabwean football with my years of experience in the UK and in Africa,” Grobbelaar is quoted in The Herald.

“I have watched the Zimbabwe Warriors team perform at the [last] Nations Cup. I trust that I can bring some great technical ideas to this team. I have made my review on the performance of the Warriors team and what I think went wrong,” he said.

Grobbelaar brings in the experience of having played at the highest level in European club football having won the champions league with Liverpool. He also played during Zimbabwe’s most illustrious period in local national football history. Grobbelaar holds a Uefa A Licence coaching badge.

He finds the prospect of working with current the Warriors team exciting and said the Warriors have the potential to out-do most African teams which did well at AFCON 2017. However, without stating exactly what he would do once hired, he said:

“[But] I will be able to bring a very experienced technical staff. The Zimbabwe football supporters are the best in Africa and are very passionate and deserve to be honored. And the only way is by getting to the finals of the [2019] Nations Cup and qualifying for the [2022] World Cup.

“I have not stopped watching Zimbabwean players playing abroad in Europe and those playing in the South African League,” he said

In the past, ZIFA has been accused of turning its back on the likes of Bruce Grobbelaar.

“Well, it depends on our football body ZIFA if they need my services. I want people to know that I love my country and ready for the duty if called or hired for the position of national team coach for the Zimbabwe Warriors,” he said.
