Akbay : Highlanders lacking in quality players

Highlanders head coach, Erol Akbay, has said the team is still short of quality players and is unlikely going to win the league title in the upcoming season.

Highlanders recently added three strikers to their squad, namely Rodreck Mutuma, Manuel Esono Obiang Buale and Tambwe Kalunga. However, Akbay says his squad still lacks depth.

The new acquisitions have excited Bosso fans, who believe this could be the season for them after falling short last season despite showing a lot of promise

Speaking at the Highlanders weekly conference, the Dutchman called for fans to be realistic.

“I know everyone wants the championship, even Tsholotsho want to win the championship, but we have to be realistic,” Akbay is quoted as saying by Newsday.

“I don’t have championship-winning material. The club has no money to buy the best players, but I only hope that we can put more pressure to [sic] the boys to do better than last year,” he added.

Highlanders will continue their pre-season preparations this weekend when they face FC Platinum in the Commander Zimbabwe National Army’s (ZNA) Charities Shield at Luveve Stadium.

The match has been switched from Barbourfields Stadium due to poor drainage at the stadium.
