Chiyangwa facing CAF sanctions

Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) and Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president, Dr. Philip Chiyangwa, is facing possible sanctions from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after its Executive Committee recommended him to the disciplinary committee.

Part of a statement from CAF read:

“The CAF Executive Committee unanimously recommended the CAF Disciplinary Board to proceed with the case of COSAFA President, also President of the Federation of Zimbabwe, Mr. Philip Chiyangwa, who has multiplied actions and statements recently that appear to attack the honour of the CAF, its president and the members of the Executive Committee.”

Dr. Chiyangwa has been at loggerheads with CAF in recent months after going ahead with his personal birthday and Cosafa election victory celebrations that saw Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) president, Gianni Infantino, a high powered delegation including FIFA Secretary General, Fatma Samba Diouf Samoura and several African football association presidents in attendance.

CAF had warned against such a gathering, arguing that it violated the organization’s statutes. However, Dr. Chiyangwa denied wrong doing and demanded an apology from CAF for the insinuations.

The ZIFA president argued that he had a mandate and a constitutional right to invite willing people for birthday celebrations and that such a right would not sensibly violate CAF rules.

Dr. Chiyangwa and the Cosafa region have publicly declared their support for Madagascar presidential candidate, Ahmad Ahmad, who will take on the incumbent, Issa Hayatou, in Thursday’s election. Meanwhile, Dr. Chiyangwa is also Ahmad’s campaign manager and has been rallying support for him throughout the continent – a feat which likely sparked the Chiyangwa/Hayatou fallout.

Unfazed by several CAF threats, Dr. Chiyangwa has recently threatened Hayatou and the CAF Secretary General with legal action.
