Chikuni blames Chapungu defeat on chaotic organization of weekend matches

Chapungu United coach, Tendai Chikuni, has blamed their 4-0 premier league thumping by CAPS United at the National Sports Stadium on poor organisation of this weekend’s games.

Government had announced that the National Sports Stadium would be closed to all Premier Soccer League activities slated for this weekend, putting all Harare premier league matches in limbo, before the decision was overturned late yesterday.

“If you look from the onset; from our preparation of the game [and] from yesterday . . . if you look at it, we lost this game yesterday before we even managed to play. Though we managed to psych the guys but it was not easy.

“The game was confirmed almost around four o’clock, then we departed Gweru around six [o’clock]. We arrived here (Harare) [at] 10 o’clock, it was almost 11 o’clock,” Chikuni told journalists after the match.

The Gweru based side drew 1-1 with Yadah during the midweek matches, incereasing their draws to two in six matches. They now have four defeats and are sitting at the bottom of the log with six points.

“When we played on Wednesday, it was also a high intensity game which we played against Yadah. So the guys could tell [that] they could not rise to the occasion. [Yet] we played against a team which was fresh and has depth.

“These are the champions of Zimbabwe (CAPS United). And if you look in the first 20 minutes, you could see the signs (of fatigue), everyone was complaining that their legs were tight. We could not match CAPS United. We tried our level best to give [players] rest but if you look at the time we rested tonight it was less than eight hours.

However, Chikuni said that Chapungu, who are facing Highlanders next, are not panicking yet despite being haunted by relegation early on in the season.

“But honestly speaking, we cannot say we are even panicking now, yes we have played six games now. It’s a cause for concern that we are not winning. But if you look at the way the league is going right now, we just need to win one game. We are almost in the mid table now (recovering) because a lot of teams are getting draws. But now what we need to do is gp back to the drawing board [and] put our act together,” he said.
