Chiyangwa reveals plan to host AFCON

Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president, Dr. Philip Chiyangwa, says his association has plans to host major CAF competitions such as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the near future.

Dr. Chiyangwa was recently appointed as vice president of an AFCON competitions organising committee.

Addressing the media while visiting the Warriors training camp at Yadah’s Complex in Waterfalls yesterday in Harare, Chiyangwa revealed that the idea had the backing of the government.

“The minister [of Sport and Recreation] (Makhosini Hlongwane) indicated that from 2021 Zimbabwe could be ready to host CAF Under 17, Under -20, Under-23 or even AFCON itself,” said Chiyangwa.

PHD Ministries founder, Prophet Walter Magaya, who was with Dr. Chiyangwa during the tour pledged his support to assist in infrastructure development that included stadiums.

“I am willing to assist and I am just waiting for the cup to come to my plate and if they say they want a stadium or two I am willing to do it,” revealed Magaya.

The Warriors are currently enjoying Magaya’s accommodation and training facilities at the Yadah complex as they prepare for the AFCON qualifier against Liberia this weekend.
