Warriors were superior, says Mapeza

Warriors coach, Norman Mapeza, has said his team dominated their opponents Liberia when they played their opening AFCON 2018 qualifier at the National Sports Stadium in Harare on Sunday.

The Warriors won 3-0 courtesy of a Knowledge Musona hatrick in the 24th, 49th and 63rd minutes respectively.

Speaking to journalists after the match, Mapeza hailed his players as deserving much of the credit for the result.

“Well, I think it was a good game of football. We were just superior in every department, we defended well. We were compact in midfield, and I think in attack, we were just clinical. I think I would say congratulations to the boys, they worked so hard today and I would also want to say thank you to the fans, I think they came in their numbers and they gave us their maximum support, I think that’s what we wanted as a team going forward.

“You know it’s a game of football, I’m sure they (Liberia) came here looking for a positive result, we were better today, and we should give credit to the boys. We were better today [by] far,” Mapeza said.

“I think for some years, this is the first [AFCON] qualifier game played at home, I think we took advantage of that, I think we have built a solid foundation going forward. I think the most important thing is just to be consistent. Let’s try to keep the team as it is.

“But I know everybody knows I’m an interim coach here, maybe next game there will be a new coach. My advice to whoever is going to come and take over is [that] let’s keep this team, include maybe one or two guys who are not here today, I think it’s a good team.”
