Dynamos will host Caps United in a rescheduled Harare Derby this afternoon at Rufaro Stadium.
As part of build up to the most anticipated Harare Derby , Soccer24 revisit an epic classic match between the two old rivals played on 7 November 2004.
At that time, Makepekepe were the top dogs dominating the rivalry. Their last defeat to Dynamos had came in the first leg of 2002 season. They were ten points clear of second placed Highlanders ahead of the match while Dynamos were still trying to regroup themselves after some boardroom squabbles which disrupted their campaign.
It was an emotional Derby as the Green Machine and the local football fraternity were still in shock after the untimely deaths of CAPS United’s Garry Mashoko, Blessing Makunike, Shingi Arlon in a car crush eight months earlier.The trio were returning from a league match which CAPS had won 2-1. Two United supporters also perished in the accident.
Former Dynamos left back Cephas Chimedza was the headlining player in the Makepekepe team together the Zambian import Ian Bakala, Brian Badza, Raymond Undi, Leonard Tsipa and David Sengu. Lloyd Chitembwe who is now their current coach was also part of the squad which faced Dynamos.
Charles Mhlauri was the coach assisted by Gishon Ntini and the now FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza.
Dynamos had the likes of James Matola, Leo Kurauzvione, Francis Chandida, Givemore Manuella, Norman Maroto, Zambian Clive Mwale and the late Lenny Gwata in their team. Clayton Munemo was the coach.
The game swang from one end to another in the first half. Tsipa was the target man upfront but Dynamos defense kept him at bay. Entertainment was rife at the back with high ball clearence of “Ninja” Gwata and James “van Dame” Matola.
The second half resumed and both teams wanted to break the deadlock first.
However after 71 minutes of play, the dreadlocked Undi glided to covert a cross from the left to sent Makepekepe in to the lead.
Nothing changed after the last whistle and CAPS United completed a double over their rivals.
With the win on the day, the Green Machine only wanted eight points from their remaining six games. They won the league three weeks later in round 28 when they beat Wankie (Hwange).
For Dembare, they suffered another 1-0 defeat the following week in the hands of Highlanders. They finished the league on position six.
