Egypt qualifies for 2018 World Cup

Mohamed Salah was the hero of the day when his brace helped Egypt reach the 2018 FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1990.

Egypt beat Congo 2-1 in a group E match played in Alexandria.

The North Africans went in to the match with an advantage after Ghana and Uganda drew 0-0 on Saturday in another group E fixture. The victory saw them qualify for the football’s biggest tournament with a game to spare on 12 points.

Salah scored the opening goal in the 62nd minute before Congo equalised with three minutes to play. However, it was Salah’s penalty in the added time which made the dream a reality for the Pharaohs.

They now join other 14 countries who have already qualified including another African country Nigeria who progressed yesterday after beating Zambia.

This will be their third world cup appearance.
