FIFA exec says 24-team Club World Cup from 2021 discussed

A member of FIFA’s ruling council says there are proposals for a 24-team Club World Cup to be played every four years from 2021.

Reinhard Grindel, who is also president of the German soccer federation, wrote on his Facebook page that he opposed the plans at a FIFA Council meeting last week in India because players need time to rest.

Grindel says FIFA is exploring playing the 24-team Club World Cup in June 2021 over 18 days, starting with eight teams split into three groups.

A seven-team Club World Cup is staged annually in December, featuring the winners of the six regional confederations and the champion of the host country’s national league. The European and South American champions have only two games because they enter in the semifinals.

A FIFA Council meeting in March 2018 is set to discuss plans for the Club World Cup again
