Can Chungwa break a four year record?

CAPS United striker Dominic Chungwa is in line to break a four year record first set by Nelson Maziwisa in 2012.

Maziwisa’s season tally of 18 goals which was equaled by Tendai Ndoro the following year is the highest in the past five years and since then no player has managed to surpass that mark.  But Chungwa seemed to be determined to reach that mark after scoring 14 goals so far.

Without looking at the number of games left, the Green Machine number 9 still have a chance to reach or exceed 18 goals considering his ability to score at least two goals per match. His recent brace came last week in a rescheduled league fixture against Highlanders.

However, if he manages to score 18 goals in this campaign, his average goals per match-day in this season will be lower than those of Ndoro and Maziwisa who played a season with 30 rounds. At this point after 30 rounds his tally is four goals short and he needs at least eight goals from the remaining four games to surpass the rate achieved by Nelson and Tendai.

Comparing his tally with other top goal scorers in the past 25 years of PSL history, nonetheless, he is way below the targets set by some players for example, Chewe Mulenga (24) in 2000, Alois Bunjira (23) in 1996 and  Evans Chikwaikwai (23) in 2008 who also played in a season with 30 rounds.

Meanwhile, Chungwa still have some pressure from second placed Lot Chiwunga who have 12 goals and Christian Epoupa who is sitting on 11 goals.
