FC Platinum eye Castle Challenge Cup

FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza is hopeful they will win the Castle Challenge Cup when they square off against 2017 Chibuku Super Cup winners Harare City at Mandava Stadium on Saturday.

The league champions play Sunshine Boys in a one off challenge match to commemorate Premier Soccer League (PSL)’s 25th anniversary. The winners will walk away with a trophy and prize money of $30 000 while the losers pocket $20 000.

“My wish is to win the tie against Harare city and it will be something great for us to win this trophy. We want to keep the silverware considering that its a one off competition. We want the cup to remain in Zvishavane,” said Mapeza.

Winston Mhango echoed his coach’s sentiments saying that they also want to add the Castle Challenge Cup to their cabinet.

“We want to win this cup so that it adds to the league trophy and that is our target,” he said.

The two teams have met in a cup competition twice before. In 2014 they clashed in the final of Chibuku Super Cup and the platinum miners triumphed after penalty shootout. Two years later, Pure Platinum Play beat City 3-0 in the semi final of the same tournament.

However, both matches had their moments of controversy. In the first encounter, FC Platinum scored a highly disputed equaliser in the additional time while in 2016 the issue bordered around the deflating of match balls by alleged FC Platinum fans.
