CAF to apply Video Assistant Referee in Super Cup

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Monday that it has officially approved applying Video Assistant Referee technology in the anticipated CAF Super Cup, the first use in African competitive football.

“It is a historic moment for African football. I’m proud that Africa has taken the initiative to embrace the latest technology towards the development of football. This is a huge step for African football and I’m positive the impact will be felt at all levels of the game,” CAF General Secretary Amr Fahmy told the body’s official website.

The Super Cup game will take place on 24 February when Morocco’s Wydad of Casablanca take on TP Mazembe of DR at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca.

“The good news is that African referees who are familiar with the VAR following their participation at FIFA tournaments will be in charge during the Total CAF Super Cup 2018,” CAF Refereeing Manager Eddy Maillet said.

The game takes place on the home soil of the CAF Champions League winners Wydad, who defeated record-holders Ahly of Egypt in the final 2-1 on aggregate.

TP Mazmebe won the Confederation Cup title defeating South African SuperSport United 2-1 in the final.
