Wydad Casablanca win CAF Super Cup with win over TP Mazembe

CAF Champions League holders Wydad Casablanca won the African Super Cup title after beating DR Congo giants TP Mazembe 1-0 with a late strike at Stade Mohamed V on Saturday.

An 83 rd-minute free-kick from midfielder Amin Thigazaoui, who superbly curled the ball past the Mazembe keeper from outside the area, was enough to secure the trophy for the Moroccans.

The game witnessed a wasted penalty from Walid El-Karti 10 minutes after the break, before another incident saw the referee award Wydad a penalty before backtracking on his decision after using the VAR technology, which was used for the first time in an African competition.

It is the first African Super Cup title in the history of Wydad, who beat Ahly in the Champions League final last year to win their maiden Champions League crown.

Mazembe, Confederation Cup holders, won the Super Cup three times.
