Benyu’s struggles continue

Kundai Benyu’s struggles seem to be far from over despite joining Oldham Athletic in January on loan from Scottish giants Celtic.

The 20-year-old had moved to the League One side with hope to get some game time but has failed to feature in the last five encounters. He has been an unused sub in most cases while in Oldham’s last game, he was not in the squad.

In Benyu’s most recent outing, the 3-0 battering at Peterborough in late January, he was subbed off on the hour mark.

During his six months at Celtic, the Warriors forward made just four appearances across all competitions. He played in one league game which he didn’t finish after being replaced in the 78th minute.

Although things have not really gone according to plan, Oldham’s form at the time Benyu joined the club could have affected him to some extent. In his first five games, they won once and lost three times. The pressure to deliver could have mounted on him considering the fact that they were failing to score more goals. (They had scored four goals in six matches at the time of Kundai’s arrival.)

Another fact is Benyu’s top football experience. Prior to his move to Celtic in August last year, he was playing semi-professional football at fifth-tier side Aldershot Town on loan from Ipswich.
