Tembo’s Supersport eliminated in CAF Confederations Cup

Kenyan champions, Gor Mahia, have progressed to the group stages on the away goal rule despite losing 2-1 to Kaitano Tembo coached South Africa’s Supersport United in the return leg at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria on Wednesday. The 1-0 result from the first leg in Machakos 10 days ago saw the tie end 2-2.

An own goal by Gor skipper Harun Shakava put Supersport ahead few minutes into the second half, but almost immediately, Francis Kahata drew the two sides level. Thabo Mnyamane gave Supersport some hope with a 68th minute goal, but Gor did just enough to hold out for the result and book a historic group phase berth.

It was however Tembo’s second win in eight matches since assuming the caretaker coach role after Eric Tinkler’s resignation.

Tembo will now have to focus on the relegation battle in the ABSA Premiership were his side sits just one point above the drop zone with three games left to play this season.
