We underrated Botswana: Mhofu

Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambwa says the players made the game difficult for themselves after getting into the match with a wrong mindset and allowed Botswana to force a draw in regulation time.

Chidzambwa believes the players underrated Botswana and it was difficult to adjust after the Zebras proved to be stubborn.

“The players were complacent, and this made it difficult for us,” said Chidzambwa.

“Botswana are a good team, and when you waste a lot of chances like what we did, you are bound to struggle.”

The Warriors coach was however full of praises for the Zimbabwean fans whose noise during the penalties unsettled Botswana.

“I want to applaud the fans for their tremendous support. Last year they again did the same thing today, and in the penalty shootouts, they spurred the boys. I urge them to come out in numbers once again in the next match,” added Chidzambwa.

Zimbabwe took a first-half lead through Evans Rusike but allowed Botswana to get back into the match in the second period. The Warriors needed the brilliance of goalkeeper George Chigova who saved three penalties to progress to the semi-finals. They will play Lesotho on Wednesday.
