Zim backs Americans to host 2026 W.C

Zimbabwe has become the latest African country to back the joint United States-Canada-Mexico 2026 World Cup bid after South Africa and Liberia were tipped to do so.

According to The Herald, ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa revealed yesterday following the visit to the country by a delegation from North America which includes United bid managing director Jim Brown, Canadian Soccer Association president Steven Reed and outgoing Mexican Football Federation boss Decio de Maria.

“We have consulted our Government. The Zimbabwe Government is warming to the United bid, and that will inform our vote accordingly,” said Chiyangwa.

“We had a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and I’m happy to say that the Zimbabwe Government is happy to support the United bid.”

Morocco is the other country that is involved in the race. The voting will be held at next week’s FIFA Congress in Russia.

However, Zimbabwe’s backing is against the wish of Caf president Ahmad who has been lobbying African countries to rally behind Morocco.
