Match Preview: Uruguay vs Portugal

Uruguay vs Portugal
2018 World Cup Round of 16
Date: Saturday, 30 June 2018
Kick-Off at 20:00 GMT +2
Venue: Olimpiyskiy Stadion Fisht, Sochi.

For the first time ever in a competitive game Uruguay take on Portugal. Óscar Tabárez has already guided Uruguay to a World Cup semi final and a Copa América title in 2011 during his 12 years in charge.

As for Portugal, they are looking to become only the third team to be the holders of both the European Championship and the World Cup at the same time, following in the footsteps of France in 2000 and Spain a decade later.

Uruguay won all 3 of their group games for the very first time at a World Cup and they didn’t concede a single goal. In their first 2 games they weren’t impressive but got the job done, recording back to back 1-0 wins over Egypt and then Saudi Arabia. However, they did turn on the style with a 3-0 win over the hosts to secure top spot in Samara and crucially both Luis Suárez and Edison Cavani scored in that game which’ll get their confidence up ahead of the knockout stages.

Portugal have only lost 2 of their last 35 competitive games, a run stretching all the way back the last World Cup in Brazil. Their 3-3 draw with Spain in their opener was one of the best games so far but it left them with work to do. They beat Morocco 1-0 thanks to a goal by you know who and went into their final game with Iran needing just a point to progress.
