Fernando Hierro has stepped down as Spain coach.

Hierro took over from Julen Lopetegui on a temporary basis, two days before Spain’s first World Cup game.However The 2010 World Cup winners were knocked out of this year’s tournament in the Round of 16.

Spanish football federation (RFEF) confirmed the development on Sunday afternoon.

The former Spain international has also turned down the option to return to his previous role of sports director.
