Nigeria narrowly escapes FIFA ban

Nigeria has avoided a FIFA ban after its government responded to a FIFA ultimatum before a suspension was due to take place.

FIFA had warned that it would suspend the west African country at 11 am GMT Monday should Amaju Pinnick be displaced.

Pinnick was elected head of Nigeria FA in 2014 and was in a stand-off with Chris Giwa, who had appealed the result and won a favourable court ruling in June.

FIFA released a statement saying: “FIFA received confirmations that the legitimate leadership of the NFF under President Amaju Melvin Pinnick and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi has been given back effective control of the NFF and its offices.”

The footballing ruling body also said it will continue to monitor the situation in Nigeria to make sure “FIFA rules and regulations are fully adhered to.”

The Nigerian FA are due to hold elections on 20 September.
