What is Mushekwi up to

Red-hot striker Nyasha Mushekwi’s withdrawal from the Warriors squad for the upcoming 2019 AFCON qualifiers has attracted a lot of confusion.

The 30-year-old pulled out of the team due to what ZIFA described as an injury issue. The association announced last week that he might miss the national team’s next assignment against Congo on September 9 after picking an “injury”.

However, Mushekwi still features for his Chinese team, Dalian Yifang, and was in action on Saturday where he scored in the 1-1 draw against Chongqing Lifan.

Soccer24 understands that the forward told Warriors manager Wellington Mupandare that he is only playing for his team because he is under injections.

What is not clear now is the kind of injury Mushekwi is carrying.

Looking from another view, he could have politely rejected the call-up following a fall-out with ZIFA in 2017 which saw him being frozen out of the national team selections.

Some analysts say the former CAPS United player probably wants an apology from the football body.

Mushekwi together with Willard Katsande and Matthew Rusike were banned by ZIFA after they allegedly influenced others to boycott a farewell dinner organised by the government before they left for the 2017 AFCON finals held in Gabon.

The boycott was done in protest over outstanding allowances from the qualifying games.
