Triangle United beat Harare City to clinch 2018 Chibuku Super Cup

Triangle United beat Harare City 2-0 to lift the 2018 Chibuku Super Cup for the first time in their history at Gibbo Stadium on Saturday.

The victory also gave coach Taurai Mangwiro’s second medal in the competition following the 2015 triumph with City.

The Sugar Boys started well, pressing high as they searched for an opener. Phineas Bamusi was the most visible in the attacks, causing all sorts of problems to Harare City’s defence. The winger was denied superbly by goalkeeper Ryan Harrison in the 8th minute.

The Sunshine Boys only found their feet towards the half-hour mark, but Lameck Nhamo interrupted the momentum when he almost hit the back of the net at the other end, only for Harrison to make another great save.

The teams went to the break tied in deadlock.

Harare City resumed play on a high note with William Manondo getting the first real chance three minutes later, but his tame shot from close range gave no problems to the keeper. They maintained the tempo until the hour when they conceded.

Captain Ralph Kawondera who was not marked, headed in Russel Madamombe’s cross to put United in the lead.

The Sunshine Boys tried to come back into the game but were unlucky as substitutes Martin Vengesai and Ishmael Wadi failed to hit the target.

However, they conceded another goal on the stroke of full-time when Bamusi made a great run, out-pacing his markers before slotting home.

The game ended 2-0 in favour of the Low Veld side as Harare City failed to defend the title which they won last year.

Triangle United will now represent Zimbabwe in the 2019/20 edition of the CAF Confederation Cup.
