Manchester United sack Jose Mourinho

Manchester United have announced the sacking of Jose Mourinho after a poor start to the season.

The club released a statement on Tuesday, confirming the development.

“Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect,” reads the statement.

“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”

Mourinho joined the club in 2016 and won the Community Shield ,Europa League and EFL Cup. However the Portuguese has struggled in the current EPL season with Manchester United currently sitting in sixth place 19 points behind leaders Liverpool.

The sacking also comes two days after the Red Devils lost 3-1 to the bitter rivals, their first league defeat in the tie since 2014. He was widely criticised for fielding a weak side in the encounter which saw the likes of Juan Mata, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial all starting on the bench.

His relationship with Pogba had also deteriorated of late which, somehow, contributed to the decline in overall team performance on the field.

Meanwhile, Michael Carrick is likely to take over until the end of season.
