Econet demands $US5k from Zifa, threatens to impose sponsorship embargo on all Zim sports codes

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has demanded US$5 000 from Zifa which was given to the football association in 2017.

The telecoms company gave Zifa the money as part of the sponsorship to the association’s awards ceremony meant to honour football legends in the country, but the event was never held.

The show was a brainchild of former Zifa president, Philip Chiyangwa and was supposed to happen in November last year.

Now that he is no longer in office, the development will be one of the first things that need the new boss, Felton Kamambo’s urgent attention before coming up with how he will clear an already existing $8 million debt.

Kamambo assumed the office after beating Chiyangwa in the polls held on Sunday.

Econet wrote to the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) last week threatening to pull out from sponsoring any sporting activity in the country until they get their money back.

Meanwhile, SRC is still to comment on the matter but will likely to put pressure on Zifa to pay back the money.
