Bonne likely to stay at Orient

Macauley Bonne is now likely to stay at Lorient Orient until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old Zimbabwe international had been linked with a move away in this January transfer window with several top clubs including five EPL sides reportedly interested in him. Leicester City were said to be leading the chase for the striker with Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Huddersfield also interested ahead of the window.

Championship clubs Norwich, Stoke, Nottingham Forest, QPR and Sheffield United all had Bonne on their radar too.

But Orient head coach Justin Edinburgh revealed to the media a few weeks ago that they were yet to receive any formal enquiry on Bonne. He described the reports as just speculation.

“It is speculation. We have heard nothing as a club, and that’s an honest answer,” Edinburgh said.

“Do I expect interest? Possibly and am I surprised? No, because we are top of the league and we have some fantastic young players who will catch people’s eye.”

With the window closing in four days time, the Zimbabwe international’s stay at the London-based club could be extended.

Bonne scored 25 league goals in the last campaign, a feat he is likely to repeat this season. He has scored 18 goals so far and on Saturday he got his third brace of the season.

The Os are also chasing the championship, and this means his departure could be delayed considering Bonne’s critical contribution in the team. Leyton are currently on top with 60 points after Match-day 31.
