Kamambo explains why Warriors matches are only played in Harare

Zifa President Felton Kamambo has revealed the reason Warriors matches have only been played in Harare in the last decade.

The national team has played most of their games in the capital and will host their next encounter which is against Congo Brazzaville at National Sports Stadium.

Responding to a question on Twitter from one of his followers, Kamambo said that stadium capacity made them settle for the bigger arenas in Harare. Zifa last used stadiums from other cities about a decade and a half ago.

The biggest stadium outside Harare is the Barbourfields in Bulawayo whose capacity has significantly been reduced to less than 30 000 due to ageing infrastructure. The most recent game which attracted a full house at Emagumeni was between FC Platinum and Orlando Pirates.

However, looking at the figures released by the Zvishavane side, the number of spectators that paid to watch that game was slightly above 22 000 with several fans turned away.

Rufaro Stadium also had its holding capacity reduced from around 44 000 in the last decade to about 35 000.

This has seen more Warriors games moved to the National Sports Stadium which can still hold a larger capacity.
