Chelsea hit Kepa with fine

Chelsea have hit goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga with a week’s wages after the 24-year old refused to be substituted during Sunday’s Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City.

Kepa, the club’s record £71m signing, resisted coach Maurizio Sarri’s attempt to replace him late in extra time for Willy Caballero before City won the match on penalties. The Italian gaffer appeared furious and walked down the tunnel before quickly returning.

The Spanish goalie has since apologised following the incident. In a statement on the club’s official website, he said: “I was very happy to play in my first Cup Final for Chelsea yesterday and very proud of the team performance.

“I have thought a lot more about yesterday’s events.

“Although there was a misunderstanding, on reflection, I made a big mistake with how I handled the situation.

“I wanted to take the time today to apologise fully and in person to the coach, to Willy (Caballero), my team-mates and to the club.

“I have done this and now I want to offer the same apology to the fans. I will learn from this episode and will accept any punishment or discipline the club decides is appropriate.”

Kepa’s one-week fine will be donated to the Chelsea Foundation.
