34-year old Kapini wants to play for Warriors again

Tapuwa Kapini has expressed a desire to play for the national team again.

The goalkeeper whose official age is 34 years last featured for the Warriors in September 2012 in an Afcon Qualifier against Angola in Harare. He is the captain of the ABSA Premiership side Highlands Park, a club he joined in 2015 while still in the second division.

Speaking on Star FM’s Daily Sports Zone on Thursday, Kapini said that he was disappointed with how the national team coaches have overlooked him in the recent times despite his “top form”.

“If you are playing a competitive game, I think you are allowed to be selected in the national team,” said the goalkeeper. “National team doesn’t have an age limit, if you are performing well, you certainly deserve a call-up.

“As a player, you will be disappointed but what you can only do is to support the selected team.

“In Europe, there are many guys who are over 30 and still play for national teams, why not in Africa or Zimbabwe.”

Asked when he would retire from playing football, the former Black Aces, Highlanders, Platinum Stars and Amazulu shot-stopper said: “I don’t drink and I don’t gain weight, so if God keeps on looking at me, I think I will still be playing until 42, 43 years.”
