Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp says they desperately needed the services of Willard Katsande in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Maritzburg United.
The midfielder was introduced in the 27th minute bench to replace Philani Zulu and played football for the first time since coming on as a second-half substitute in the Soweto Derby last month.
He had failed to make it into the playing squad in the last three matches and his contribution yesterday came in handy as he managed to stabilize the midfield.
In a post-match interview with SuperSport TV, Middendorp said: “Katsande’s change was necessary because we could not wait until halftime. It has nothing to do with the quality of Philani Zulu.
“He (Zulu) is another type of midfielder, and but at this moment it was very clear we needed Katsande, a winning-ball midfielder and I think he has done well.”
