Makunike, Alron and Mashoko: Gone but not forgotten

Today marks fifteen years since the death of three CAPS United players – Blessing “Yogo Yogo” Makunike, Shingirai Alrone and Gary Mashoko – in a car accident.

The accident happened when the players were travelling back from Bulawayo after winning a league match 2-1 against Njube Sundowns.

The trio did not travel in the team bus and instead joined the two supporters in their car which crashed into a pillar of the bridge near Norton and caught fire. All five people in that vehicle were burned to death.

We, at Soccer24 Zimbabwe, join the football fraternity in commemorating the 15th anniversary of this tragedy. We pray that their souls continue to rest in peace and their beloved ones get comfort from God’s love.

Makunike, Alron and Mashoko were part of the 2004 squad that went on to win the league, losing only one match on the way. CAPS United had made a huge investment in new players in a bid to win their first league championship since 1996, and the club had won its first two games of the season.
