Warriors’ records against Afcon opponents

The 2019 Afcon draw was held on Friday night and the Warriors are in Group A along with hosts Egypt, Uganda and DRC.

Zimbabwe will start their campaign against Egypt on the 21st of the June.

This would be the second meeting between the two sides at the tournament. They played each other at the 2004 edition with the Warriors losing agonisingly 2-1 in the match. This happened when our national team was making its first-ever appearance at the tournament.

But, overall, the North Africans have proved to be a difficult opponent to Zimbabwe. They have won all of the four meetings which occurred since the turn of the millennium.

Against Uganda, the Warriors have played four games since 2010 with the latest meeting coming in 2016 in a friendly match. It ended in a 2-0 victory for Zimbabwe.

Each side has won once while two games have ended in stalemate. Their game at Afcon is scheduled for the 26th of June.

The results against DRC in the games played since the turn of the millennium have gone in favour of the Warriors. The two teams met in the 2019 Afcon qualifiers with Zimbabwe winning in Kinshasa before drawing at home.

The Congolese’s only victory in the tie came in 2001, beating the Warriors 2-1 in Kinshasa.

The Afcon encounter is on the 30th of June.
