Zifa cancels Bafana Bafana friendly, announce new plans

The reported friendly match between the Warriors and South Africa has been cancelled, according to the Herald.

The national team was supposed to use the encounter as part of their preparations for the 2019 Afcon. The match was scheduled to take place in the capital on the 26th of May, but following a Zifa executive meeting on Thursday, the team will now depart for South Africa for the COSAFA Cup on the 25th.

The association noted that the two nations could meet in one of the matches at the tournament, and both countries have decided to use the regional competition as part of their AFCON preparations. Coach Sunday Chidzambwa will select a full-strength squad which will have players that will participate at the AFCON finals.

The Warriors will spend a month down south before travelling to Nigeria for an international friendly against the Super Eagles on June 7 although the date of the match could be shifted depending on the final contract to be drawn, between the two parties.

After the game, the Zimbabwe delegation will remain in the West African nation for, at least, four days holding their training camp before leaving for the United Arab Emirates where they will play the Black Stars of Ghana on June 16.
