Coventry fires back at COSAFA, says they won’t be arm twisted by “threats”

COSAFA has given Zimbabwe another chance to host the senior men’s tournament, but Sports minister Kirsty Coventry says the country will only accept the offer if it’s good.

Zimbabwe pulled out of holding this year’s edition in the last minute, a development which attracted a $200 000 fine from the regional body but was reduced to $50 000 provided Zifa accepts to host the 2020 COSAFA Cup.

Posting on Social Media, Coventry says the Government will never sign any guarantees to help host the tournament unless the deal is satisfying. She adds that they will not be arm-twisted by threats from the council.

Zifa will also get a ban, possibly for the next edition, on top of the fine should they fail to accept the offer to host the event in 2020.

Meanwhile, the local body is yet to comment on the matter and reveal the next move which should be made within the two months from now.
